To be a professional ?

I am about to embark on my professionalism essay as part of my cert ed.

All our lectures at Northern College have been surrounding professionalism. I have been doing quite a lot of critical thinking about what professionalism is, and what it is when thinking about teaching and education in ‘life long learning’ (that title alone can raise eyebrows).

I think the conclusion I have reached so far is that being published gives educators a sense of “making it”. This idea of being published strikes a chord! It occurred to me today that in my past life as a hairdresser, I felt like I could call myself a professional once I had become published in trade magazines and competing in photographic competitions.

So here is a step back in time, to the sometimes weird world of creative hairdressing.
